And for anyone who is, or was, a NYC dweller, The You Train by N.K. Jemison will bring up a lot of those surreal memories of waiting in subway stations at 4 a.m. wondering what, if any, train will come. Because everyone who ever lived there has those memories.

It’s December already? I’m still not used to California weather. My brain only registers winter when it sees snow. Unfortunately because of ensuing holiday craziness, I didn’t get to actually read a lot of the fiction this time around. I’m still trying to catch up. Luckily it seems that any magazine that publishes on anything less than a monthly basis times it so they don’t put out a new issue in November–either that or they make sure they don’t have any female writers in their ranks this time of year.

Once again Strange Horizons has one of the best ratios–going 4 for 4 last month.

So here’s the deal: As a member of the Pyr Street Team, I wanted to do a little something extra aside from just posting book reviews in my blog. I came up with the fun (for me) idea of doing a year-end discussion of the imprint in general, and then came up with the really silly idea of doing superlatives for the 2007 releases. But the CROWNING idea was coming up with a Pyr Book Giveaway.

If you’ve been interested AT ALL in ANY of the Pyr books I’ve reviewed in my journal (need a refresher? Just click here), now’s your chance to win one. Why bring it up? There’s fifteen titles total that I’ve read/reviewed, and of those fifteen, five are written by women (this doesn’t include the Fast Forward anthology, which has 9/21 women writers in it), and of those five, three books (Kenyon’s Bright of the Sky, Latner’s Hurricane Moon, and Robson’s Selling Out) were published in 2007. So was the anthology, if you’re interested in nominating short stories. Interested? For details on how to enter, just go here. Good luck to all who enter, and I do hope there’s a lot of you, simply because if this goes well, I might be able to do something similar in my blog in the future! Happy Reading!

Continuing with the changes here at the bookswap blog. First, we switched the theme (in case you hadn’t noticed). Hopefully this one will be more reader-friendly. Bigger text! Fewer sidebars! More chocolate! …Okay, maybe not that last one.

Next up: Book Reviews. In addition to the short fiction reviews/online fiction roundups our wonderful blog editor will post, I’ve also invited some folks to post reviews of books here. You’ll see those mostly toward the middle and end of the month. If you see a book/novel that interests you, drop by the forum and see if anyone is swapping that title. If not, you can always request it (or buy it yourself and then swap it with us!).

Finally: Don’t forget to join the swap on the forum. I’ll probably keep saying this until everyone everywhere has joined. I’m like an NPR pledge drive but much, much worse

To start, please read our About post, if you haven’t already and join the LibraryThing group. Also check out our “How to Help” page to get even more involved. If you’re a female SF author or publish female SF authors, read about how to get your book circulating in our bookswap. If you know of a book coming out (or already out) that fits the criteria, make sure it’s listed on the FeministSF Wiki.

I’m also looking for someone to help me manage this blog. We won’t post very often, but someone needs to keep an eye on the comments, spam, etc., with some regularity. If you’re interested, drop me a comment.
